Only One Earth

#OnlyOneEarth is the theme for World Environment Day 2022.

This theme itself signifies the ‘value’ that we humans must accord to Planet Earth, which supports life.

Till date, Earth is the only place in the known universe confirmed to host life.

Though, NASA is exploring the solar system and beyond, to look into the possibility of life beyond our home planet – from studying the habitability of Mars to probing ‘ocean worlds’ to identifying Earth size planets around distant stars, Earth is still our only Home.

Therefore, it is not only our moral responsibility and duty but also the most logical and rational thing to ‘safeguard Earth’s finite resources’. According to sustainability experts, we currently need 1.7 planets to support humanity's demand on the ecosystem. This unregulated exploitation of Mother Earth leads to destruction of the system that supports human life.

If you closely monitor the pattern of climate change in the last few decades, you would agree that Climate Change is real and is largely due to our own actions.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has stated that -

“Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, and sea level has risen. Human influence on the climate system is clear, and recent anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are the highest in history. Recent climate changes have had widespread impacts on human and natural systems.”

Hence there is an urgent need to re-establish a degree of coexistence with nature to stabilize the society and life on the planet. We cannot just wait for the governments and international bodies to act and reverse the trend of environmental degradation. Civil society, corporates, women and youth bodies, student-based organizations etc. must work together with the government to spur urgent action for creating a healthy planet for prosperity of all. Infact, we at Karma feel that the onus to protect the environment is on each one of us – You and Me.

Let me share few simple choices that we all can make in our daily life to protect Mother Earth -

  • 3Rs - Reduce Reuse & Recycle

  • Upcycle (Turn Trash into Treasure)
